Artist and entrepreneur Andrea Maack has created a unique family home on the Reykjanes Peninsula: the “Geopark Villa” is as versatile as the Icelandic nature that surrounds it. We talked to Andrea about her unconventional, flexible living concept.

Blum Inspirations: Andrea, thank you so much for welcoming us into your home. It is immediately obvious that this is not a classic single-family home. Could you tell us a little more about what makes this space so special for you?

Andrea Maack: When we decided to build this house in Iceland, the idea was to make it truly multi-functional. I have my own perfume label and wanted to be able to also use this space as a showroom. At the same time, the house should be a proper family home. I wanted to create a space that could easily be turned from a studio into a home and back again. It was challenging, but we managed to combine the best of both worlds.

I believe that flexibility is the future.Andrea Maack

Blum Inspirations: We are sitting here against the breath-taking backdrop of Iceland, your home. To what extent did this natural setting influence your ideas for the Geopark Villa?

Andrea Maack: We are located in an active volcanic region with stunning landscapes. When it came to designing the house, we wanted to reflect that. The landscape here looks a little like the moon, and we used futuristic elements and high-end solutions to capture that impression.

A unique landscapeThe Reykjanes Peninsula is one of the UNESCO Global Geoparks and is known for its variety of volcanic and geothermal activity. It is the only place in the world where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge rises above sea level.

Blum Inspirations: Speaking of the future, what do you think will become increasingly important in living spaces?

Andrea Maack: For me, the future lies in flexibility. It will have to be possible to use rooms in different ways. For someone like me who runs a business, has a family and also travels a lot, it is vital to be able to adapt spaces quickly. With flexible solutions such as the Blum REVEGO pocket system, I can change the entire atmosphere of the house within no time. That, to me, is the future.

Blum Inspirations: Why were the combination possibilities opened up by REVEGO so important to you?

Andrea Maack: We benefited a lot from the range of configurations that REVEGO makes possible. Our goal was to create multifunctional spaces – for instance, by being able to fully conceal the kitchen so that we can use that space for other purposes. The fact that REVEGO can be implemented up to a height of three metres really helped us divide the space effectively. The main room is very large, and with REVEGO it was possible to create more dimension and depth. The solution also looks much lighter than a wall would be. This is particularly apparent in the bedroom, where REVEGO functions as a wardrobe as well as a room divider.

Blum Inspirations: Can you tell us a little more about the planning process?

Andrea Maack: Working with Blum products was really easy. The Product Configurator was a great help during the planning stage and allowed us to seamlessly integrate everything, including the three-metre-high solutions.

Blum Inspirations: Thank you for taking the time to talk to us.
