Kitchen designs in harmonious dark tones

A new design trend is currently making waves when it comes to kitchen planning: Blum Inspirations has taken a closer look at kitchens in harmonious dark tones – and also asks the question of just how practical they are in everyday use.

What are the non-negotiables for the perfect kitchen? Sufficient storage space, well-coordinated motion sequences and fittings that will stand the test of time are probably among the first things that come to mind. And then there is personal taste – the overall look of a kitchen – which plays an equally important role.

In recent years, black has become an increasingly popular colour choice for kitchens. Rightly so, as many designers believe: after all, black has long been considered a timeless, stylish colour option in many other areas, such as fashion or consumer electronics. Blum Inspirations has taken a closer look at this trend and presents two kitchens that embody these new design lines.

The colour black is often associated with luxury and elegance, and dark-coloured kitchens such as this one express a commitment to the highest quality standards. Ideally, the inner fittings of the kitchen also follow a uniform colour design that aligns with these expectations. Hinges and drawers in dark colours are the perfect choice as they create a consistent design concept both inside and outside. To preserve the elegant exteriors for as long as possible, high-quality, robust surfaces are a must.

Kitchens in dark colours are particularly suited to larger rooms

A black kitchen is a timeless choice that will delight users for many years to come. However, it is probably a good idea to keep a cleaning cloth at hand: fingerprints tend to be more visible on darker surfaces. In our second sample kitchen, a lighter surface was chosen for the worktop area to reduce this problem.

This kitchen by Gama Decor is an excellent example of how elegant dark-coloured fronts can look when combined with deliberately placed elements in lighter colours and purposeful lighting.

Kitchens in dark colours are particularly suited to larger rooms. This is where they really come into their own, as shown by the solutions in our examples. For small or badly lit kitchens, black should be used with caution as it can “shrink” the room and make it appear even darker.

  • Talking of large kitchens: to maximise the space inside a wall cabinet, we recommend using fronts with lift systems. Fronts that open up and out of the user's way ensure ideal freedom of movement during daily kitchen routines.

All details at a glance:

  • In recent years, black has made a name for itself as a timeless, stylish colour option for kitchens.

  • High-quality, robust surfaces turn this trend into a long-term solution.

  • Kitchens in dark colours are particularly suited for larger rooms.

  • Lift systems create additional space in wall units.
