Four-legged flatmates

Pet ownership is booming: whereas cats and dogs were once working animals, now they are members of the family – and have long claimed our cities as their own. You don't have to have a garden, they can also feel at home in an apartment. A development that's reflected in furnishings and lifestyle.

City dogs and cool cats

Almost half of German households have at least one pet. Cats are the most popular choice, closely followed by dogs, but households also keep smaller animals and birds. In fact one in four German households has a cat and one in five has a dog. Dogs and cats also lead the way in international rankings. But, we are being faced with ever increasing rates of urbanisation, so we need to consider the needs of city dwellers so they too can enjoy the benefits of animal ownership. After all, our beloved four-legged friends should want for nothing.

Whether you live in the city or in the country, pets are important companions – especially for children.

From a place to sleep to a design statement

The typical cat or dog basket is declining in popularity. Nowadays, people are seeking something more exclusive. Therefore modern homes feature stylish pillows, blankets, mats, beds, sofas and even tipis which match the carefully-considered human furnishings. These beds are made of materials that are skin and fur-friendly, such as felt, leather, (faux) fur or velvet. If you don't have much space at home, why not consider space-saving alternatives, such as a dedicated sleeping area under the stairs for your dog, pull-out beds in cupboards, or even the sofa?

When Maximus visited the Blum Canada showroom, he found a comfortable place for a nap on the pull-out LEGRABOX drawer, located in the sofa in the "Inspirations" area.

A cosy retreat for cats

To prevent indoor cats from attacking your furniture, you need to provide them with some attractive alternatives. Scratching posts and boards can be highly decorative! You can even get some shaped like a chaise longue! Our feline friends also expect to have their meals served in elegant bowls. To make sure that their fine food isn't wolfed down in one go, it should be kept well out of paws' way. This is where furniture with lift systems, such as by Blum, comes into play. You can also use these solutions to create a cosy, enclosed retreat for cats, which can be opened up to clean the beds and cushions.

Cats love to have somewhere to hide away. But this also needs to be accessible in the event of an emergency. Cleverly placed lift systems are the answer.

Fun and games

Since indoor cats, unlike dogs, don't have access to the outdoors for exercise, they need to be kept entertained, such as with a climbing wall with multiple levels. Dogs, on the other hand, like to play with balls, squeaky toys or chews. Yet when you've got visitors, you're going to want to tidy everything away. A plinth solution with storage space such as comes in rather handy here.

With the SPACE STEP plinth solution, food bowls and dog toys can be cleared away in no time.

Haute couture for your pet

You can extend your personal fashion style to your four-legged friend: lap dogs or cats can be transported in stylish carriers. If it's a bit cold outside, fashionable jackets and pullovers can be worn – matching the collar of course! These exclusive items need to be stored appropriately at home. Elegant drawers such as the  box system or wooden pull-outs with the runner system are perfect here. They are also ideal for harnesses and leads. Practical inner dividing systems keep things even tidier, so everything is always ready to go when going out for walks.

Keeping things tidy is a must when sharing your home with pets.

Everything at a glance:

  • More and more pets are becoming city dwellers

  • Space-saving pull-outs that disappear into furniture and niches (such as under the stairs) create cosy retreats for dogs and cats

  • Lift systems make concealed sleeping spots for cats also accessible for owners

  • When you've got visitors, dog toys can be tidied away in the furniture plinth with SPACE-STEP

  • Accessories can be stored tidily away in drawers with inner dividing systems where they are always to hand.
