U-shaped kitchen: Everything you need to know

  • What defines a U-shaped kitchen

  • The advantages of this layout

  • The disadvantages of this layout

U-shaped kitchens consist of three single runs of kitchen cabinets connected together to form a "U" shape. The units are generally arranged along adjacent walls, although one side can be left open as a peninsula.

Both versions of the U-shaped kitchen offer plenty of work surface and storage space – although it's important to find a good solution for the corners to avoid wasted space. Sufficient space is also needed between the sides of the kitchen to ensure that there's enough room for cooking and so that doors and pull-outs don't collide.

Blum's requirements research has shown that the U-shaped kitchen is the most efficient kitchen layout. Compared to other kitchen shapes, there is not as far to walk between the different kitchen zones.

For example, in a single run kitchen, the test subject took an average of 40% more steps to perform the same tasks. Extrapolated over a year, this equates to an additional distance of over three marathons.

However, the results for your own kitchen may vary depending on aspects such as the size of the room and the existing water and power connections. And of course, personal taste is also an important factor. With all this in mind, the most efficient kitchen is not necessarily the best kitchen.
